Personal Tech Policy

GVMS Personal Tech Policy

At GVMS, we are dedicated to fostering a learning environment that maximizes student engagement and academic success. As part of this commitment, we are implementing a new Personal Tech Policy for all students. The increasing use of cell phones and other personal tech devices during instructional time has become a significant distraction, impacting students' ability to focus and participate fully in class activities.

Why Reduce Cell Phone Use?

Research shows that excessive use of cell phones can lead to decreased attention, lower academic performance, and reduced social interaction among students. By minimizing distractions, we aim to:

  • Enhance Focus: Allow students to fully engage with the lesson, leading to better understanding and retention of material.
  • Promote Social Interaction: Encourage face-to-face communication and collaboration with peers and teachers, which are essential skills for personal and academic growth.
  • Improve Learning Outcomes: Create a more structured and distraction-free environment, helping students to achieve their full potential.

Key Points of the Policy:

1. Storing Devices:

  • Upon entering the school, all students must place their silenced devices in their locker. (Includes all personal tech: airpods, headsets, etc.)
  • No devices should be used as a replacement for a forgotten or uncharged Chromebook.

2. Classroom Management

  • Hallpasses do not include phone privileges.

3. Handling Emergencies and Urgent Communications:

  • If family communication is needed during the day, please call the office and students can come to the office to call home.
  • Urgent Needs: There are some students who have devices for medical and academic accommodations. These students are known to the teachers.

4. Non-Compliance:

  • 1st Offense- The student will be sent to the office to place the device in the phone caddy in the . The student may collect the device at the end of the day.
  • 2nd Offense- The student will again take the phone to the office to be placed in the phone caddy, and Parents/Guardians will have to come get the device.
  • 3rd Offense- The student and parent will meet with school officials and be required to turn their phone into the office each morning.
